I was busy today getting an auction of scarves ready for this week’s auction and I started getting really annoyed by the number of FAKE designer silk scarves out there. When I was shopping for “used” & “pre-owned” scarves this week, I found an alarming number of fakes. Now, there are always the obvious ~ cheap, poorly made fake brand names. Then there are the ones which are made of real quality silk, are really hand rolled and hand stitched but they have a fake signature. I won’t ever knowingly sell a fake scarf; to me they are trash, which at the same time is so wasteful.
Then I was further bothered when I “googled” fake designer scarves and instead of finding out how to spot a fake, or what a fake was I was given pages of places I could purchase fake scarves!!!
The purpose of this blog isn’t to try to explain how to spot a fake, but I will eventually do that. However I do just want to say, be sure you know what you are buying. I am not as brand conscious as some others, but it bothers me when people pay for something thinking they are getting something else! There are many, many, beautiful scarves with lesser known designers or that are completely unsigned and unbranded, which can be just as lovely. In fact a favourite (Canadian spelling), scarf can be silk, cotton, rayon, polyester or acrylic, being inexpensive does not make it cheap.
When you get to know scarves after working with them for several years, it becomes easier to spot the fakes, and it is hard to not become the fake silk scarf police! However, instead I have decided to further educate myself and offer as many beautiful, quality, authentic pieces to my customers as I can.
